this evening I started thinking about tomorrow afternoon and that awkward quiet chewing sound that typically takes over the thanksgiving table about ten minutes into the meal when my family has already ran out of things to talk about. and I thought to myself, it wouldn’t be a bad idea to pack a dvd or two for my little brother, sister, and I to veg out to while I can’t seem to get even the slightest bit tipsy even though I have consumed what seems like a dozen glasses of wine…
thus, I present to you my top 3 tofurkey day classics starting with home for the holidays- easily my first pick from the thanksgiving genre. it’s hard to believe this film is now 16 years old! holly hunter is surprisingly not irritating, robert downey jr. is at his finest, and there’s even a claire danes cameo appearance, my so called life era. safe for most families, just maybe not your super conservative set, but most others and guaranteed to get laughs from the toughest to please relatives.

next up, the katie holmes indie featuring a pretty sweet soundtrack by the magnetic fields, pieces of april. I wouldn’t share this one with the fam, instead I’d put this on if you’re spending the holiday alone by choice, purposely avoiding the folks, or perhaps you’re staying in with your boyfriend/girlfriend and enjoy snickering at the silliness of the american turkey ritual, etc. it’s a little sad, a little funny, and a little ridiculous. patricia clarkson is great. of course. and I also quite like katie’s uptight sister who is now more famously known for playing such radical roles as anne kronenberg in milk and kim pine in scott pilgrim.

and last but certainly not least, I bring you lars and the real girl. sure, maybe a stretch as it’s not usually thought of as a thanksgiving number but I’d definitely throw it in the holiday group (remember the xmas scene?). a surprise crowd-pleaser, parents will think the subject matter is off putting yet after twenty minutes will be glued to the set. the perfect pick for the end of the day, while most of the clan are still on a tryptophan high and/or boozy nog buzz, this one’s sure to promote lots of laughs, possibly a few tears, and concludes with a really sweet, heartwarming message. aww.

possibly against my better judgment, I’m going to see bridesmaids today. not a big fan of slapstick humor, but it’d be nice to laugh. and I love, love, love KW.
